PIANO LESSONS

The piano is at the heart of our music program here at Sounds of Color Studio. It’s the first instrument we began teaching 30 years ago, and to this day it remains our most popular music class. For starters, the piano is one of the most approachable instruments, providing a comprehensive foundation in many of the most essential music skills. Sight-reading, music theory, posture, chords & scales - it’s all there. With a background in piano you can go almost anywhere in the musical word, for the skills you’ll learn are easily transferrable with many other instruments. So pull up a bench and let’s start your musical journey with the piano.

How We Teach • Piano Lessons

No matter your experience level or age, we start every student’s piano experience with the same question: “What would you like to learn?” Unlike many music schools that impose a rigid curriculum with a few select genres, at Sounds of Color Studio our students have the freedom to choose from any style of music they want to learn. Over the years our students have performed pieces from an incredibly diverse list of singers, musicians and composers, from Twenty One Pilots to Tchaikovsky. So whether you want to explore the classical genre, or learn how to play your favorite pop song, you’ll find there’s no limit to your musical repertoire with piano lessons at Sounds of Color Studio.

Commonly Asked Questions About Piano Lessons

  • The earliest we recommend starting piano lessons is 3 and 1/2 years old with our “Piano for Little Mozarts” program. This is typically the perfect age where a child's hand size is ready to start playing the keys.

  • We always recommend students to have their own piano or keyboard at home to ensure a regular practice routine. Plus, it's always fun to entertain family and friends with the latest piece you're learning! Let your teacher know if you need a new piano or keyboard and we can provide recommendations.

  • Learning any new skill requires daily practice in order to build good habits and a proper routine, and the same applies to learning the piano. After an initial assessment, your teacher will advise you on a recommended practice time based on your level. As you progress, your practice time should increase to allow you the proper time to warm up and review your pieces. The Piano Teachers Federation has a great breakdown of recommended practice times by experience level here.

  • Yes! We know pianos are a big investment, and we only trust the finest piano tuners in Orange County to tune our pianos in the studio. Just let your teacher know and we'd be happy to refer you to one of our amazing piano tuners if you need their service at home.

  • Not at all! If learning how to play an instrument is your dream, we're here to help students of any age learn how to play beautiful music.

  • Yes. Our teachers have extensive experience and/or educational backgrounds in their area of specialization. Every teacher is thoroughly vetted and goes through a comprehensive background check, including FBI and Department of Justice clearance.

  • We do our best to match every student with the perfect teacher, but if for any reason it's just not the right fit, we will be more than happy to find an alternative solution. Depending on the situation, this may include finding a new teacher for private lessons, or a different group class.

  • It is natural to expect some challenges when starting any new activity, especially for the first time. With younger students in particular, we may recommend sticking with the instrument for just a while to properly assess if any adjustments can be made from the teacher's approach. We encourage any students/families to bring this matter to their teacher's attention as early as possible. After consulting with their teacher, students are free to switch their instrument if needed.

  • Yes! We have many students who require special learning accommodations, and our dedicated and caring teachers help everyone shine in their classes. Please inform us of any special circumstances during registration.
